Crelle's Journal, often just called Crelle, is a very important journal for mathematics. Think of a journal as a special magazine where scientists and mathematicians share their new discoveries and ideas. This journal publishes articles about math every month.

It was started by a mathematician named August Leopold Crelle in 1826 in a city called Berlin. The full name in German is Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik, which means Journal for Pure and Applied Mathematics in English.

A Journal for Big Ideas

August Leopold Crelle was the editor of the journal until he passed away in 1855. Many really important math articles were published in Crelle's Journal. These articles had a huge influence on how mathematics grew and changed over time.

Famous Mathematicians and Their Work

The journal published famous papers by brilliant mathematicians. Some of these include:

  • Niels Henrik Abel: A Norwegian mathematician known for his work on equations.
  • Georg Cantor: A German mathematician who created set theory, a big part of modern math.
  • Gotthold Eisenstein: Another German mathematician who made important contributions to number theory and analysis.

Editors Through the Years

After Crelle, Carl Wilhelm Borchardt became the editor from 1856 to 1880. During this time, people often called it Borchardt's Journal. Today, the editor is Rainer Weissauer from Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg.
