Crescent is a city located in Logan County, Oklahoma, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,299 people lived there. It is part of the larger Oklahoma City area.

History of Crescent

Crescent started because of a law called the Indian Appropriations Act of 1889. This law opened up land for settlement. In the fall of 1889, a man named William Brown began selling goods from a wagon.

Soon, he teamed up with Benjamin Ryland. They moved their store into a log cabin. A post office opened on February 21, 1890, and was named "Crescent City." The name came from a moon-shaped clearing where the town began.

In November 1891, the town's layout was officially planned. Crescent became an official city in 1893. In 1902, the Denver, Enid and Gulf Railroad built train tracks about one mile (1.6 km) west of the city.

The town then bought land from two farmers and moved closer to the new train tracks. This new area was sometimes called "new Crescent" or "West Crescent." Oil was found north of town in 1926 and south of town in 1930. This area became known as the "Crescent Oil Field."

On June 20, 1934, the Farmers and Merchants Bank was robbed. A group of men took 13 people to help them move a safe. They loaded the safe into a truck and drove out of town with the people. Luckily, they left both the people and the safe behind, and no one was hurt. The safe was not opened.

In 1965, a factory called the Cimarron Processing Facility opened near Crescent. It was owned by a company called Kerr-McGee. This factory made fuel pellets for nuclear power plants using materials like uranium and plutonium.

In the early 1970s, there were concerns about safety at the factory. Because of these safety issues, the factory stopped making fuel in 1976. Cleanup projects have been ongoing to make the area safe.
