Crescent Falls is a beautiful set of two waterfalls in west-central Alberta, Canada. They are located on the Bighorn River, flowing through a deep canyon. The falls were once called Bighorn Falls, named after the river. Their current name, Crescent Falls, comes from the crescent-shaped cliff they tumble over.
The falls are just a few kilometers upstream from where the Bighorn River joins the North Saskatchewan River. You can reach them by driving about 4.5-kilometre-long (2.8 mi) on a gravel road. This road leads north from the David Thompson Highway, which is between Abraham Lake and Nordegg. The Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area is right next to the falls.

About Crescent Falls
Crescent Falls is a two-tiered waterfall, meaning it drops in two main sections. The total height of the falls is about 27 metres (89 ft). That's as tall as a nine-story building!
Visitors can come to see the waterfalls all year round. It's important to be very careful near the falls. The rocks around the top can be slippery, so always watch your step. Also, swimming right at the bottom of the falls can be dangerous because of strong currents.
History of Discovery
The first time these falls were mentioned was in 1892. Arthur Philemon Coleman, a geology professor from the University of Toronto, wrote about them. He said the scenery was "far better" than what he was used to seeing in the foot-hills.
A Special Bench
Near the falls, there is a sitting bench dedicated to James Hammond. His family placed it there after he passed away. James loved the outdoors and this spot was one of his favorites.
Campground Information
North-west of Crescent Falls, you'll find an un-serviced campground. It is managed by Westward Bound Campgrounds. The campground has 31 sites where you can set up your tent or park your RV. It is usually open from May 1st to October 14th.
The campground has access to water. However, it's a good idea to bring your own drinking water. This is because there can sometimes be tiny germs in the ground water.
Travel Tips
A trip to Crescent Falls and back usually takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. It's important to know that access to the area directly below the first waterfall is restricted. This is mostly because the conditions can be unsafe, especially when the ice is thin in winter.
