Crinum's Landscape
Crinum is home to the Kestrel coal mine. This mine digs up coal, which is used for energy and making steel. The mine has a lot of coal, about 50 to 100 million tonnes! The bigger Kestrel coal reserve, which includes Crinum and nearby areas, has even more.
Even though there are mines in the area, most of the land in Crinum is used for farming. Farmers here mostly raise animals like cattle (this is called grazing) and grow crops.
A Look Back: Crinum's History
A school called Gregory Mine State School opened in Crinum on 10 July 1978. However, it closed quite quickly on 14 December 1979.
Crinum was also the site of a very long protest. From October 1997 to August 1999, a group of mine workers held a protest line. This happened after they were no longer working at the Gordonstone Coal Mine, which later became the Kestrel coal mine. This protest became the longest one of its kind in Australia's black coal industry. In 1998, a special monument was built to remember this protest. It is called the Lilyvale Stand Monument.
Important Places: Heritage
Crinum has a special place listed for its history. This is the Lilyvale Stand Monument. It is located on Lilyvale Road. This monument helps us remember the long protest that happened here.
