Cristóbal Colón y de la Cerda (born June 8, 1837, in Madrid – died October 30, 1910, in Madrid) was an important Spanish leader. He was the 14th Duke of Veragua and the 12th Marquess of Jamaica. He served as a government minister during a time when Spain was ruled by a queen acting for her young son, and later when the king himself was in charge.
About Cristóbal Colón y de la Cerda
Cristóbal Colón y de la Cerda was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1837. He was the oldest son of Pedro Colón y Ramirez de Baquedano. His family was very famous because he was a direct descendant of the explorer Christopher Columbus.
Cristóbal Colón y de la Cerda started his career in politics. He was chosen to represent the Province of Ávila in the Spanish parliament in 1871. He was re-elected in 1872. Later, in 1876, he was chosen to represent Puerto Rico.
In 1878, he became a Senator, which is another important role in government. He even became the Vice President of the Senate. This meant he helped lead the Senate's meetings and decisions.
His Work as a Minister
Cristóbal Colón y de la Cerda held two very important jobs in the Spanish government. He was the Minister of Public Works. This role meant he was in charge of things like roads, bridges, and buildings for the country.
He also served as the Minister of the Navy. In this job, he was responsible for Spain's navy, including its ships and sailors. He held these positions during the time when Queen Maria Christina was ruling for her young son, and later when King Alfonso XIII took the throne.
In 1892, he received a special award called the Order of the Golden Fleece. This was given to him to celebrate 400 years since Christopher Columbus discovered America. It was a very high honor.
In 1897, he was also chosen to be a member of the American Antiquarian Society. This is a group that studies old books and historical items.
In 1900, he went on a special trip to Berlin, Germany. He was sent by King Alfonso XIII to give the German Crown Prince Wilhelm the Order of the Golden Fleece award. This showed the good relationship between Spain and Germany.
