The Cropani's tree boa (Corallus cropanii) is a rare type of boa snake. It belongs to the Boidae family. This snake is special because it is only found in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Like all boas, it is not venomous, meaning it doesn't have poison.
For many years, this snake was hardly ever seen. No living snake was found between 1953 and 2017. Only a few dead ones were collected during that time. Then, in January 2017, something amazing happened. Local people in Ribeira found a living adult female Cropani's tree boa. It was about 1.7 meters (5.6 feet) long. They took it to snake experts from the Instituto Butantan and the Museum of Zoology of the University of São Paulo. The experts put a small radio tag on the snake. This helped them track it and learn more about how it lives. After studying it, they released the snake back into its natural home.
The Cropani's tree boa is considered an endangered animal. This means it is at high risk of disappearing forever.

What's in a Name?
The scientific name for this snake, cropanii, honors an Italian geologist. His name was Ottorino de Fiore, Baron of Cropani.
Where Do They Live?
The Cropani's tree boa prefers to live in forests. These snakes are found only in or near the coastal plain of São Paulo, Brazil. They live at elevations between 40 and 45 meters (about 130 to 150 feet). You can find them in areas like Miracatu, Pedro de Toledo, and Santos.
What Do They Look Like?
The Cropani's tree boa has special features. It has more than 30 rows of scales on its back around the middle of its body. But it has fewer than 36 rows. It also has deep sensory pits on its upper lips. These pits help the snake sense its surroundings.
How Do They Behave?
The Cropani's tree boa is a very rare snake. Before the 2017 discovery, only a few specimens had ever been found. This meant scientists knew almost nothing about how these snakes live. The snake found in Ribeira in 2017 helped experts learn more. They confirmed that Cropani's tree boas often live in trees. This is why they are called "tree boas."
How Do They Have Babies?
The Cropani's tree boa is ovoviviparous. This means the mother snake carries her eggs inside her body. The eggs hatch inside, and then she gives birth to live young.
