Crossbost is a small village located on the beautiful Isle of Lewis. This island is part of the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. Crossbost is about ten miles away from Stornoway. Stornoway is the main town on the island.
Crossbost is a quiet place. It has a Free Church of Scotland building. There is also a graveyard and a war memorial. You can still see an old-fashioned, bright red telephone box there. However, it only takes cards now, not coins! The village also has two piers. These are used regularly by locals, mostly for personal boats.
A Glimpse into Crossbost's History
Crossbost village was established in the 1840s. This happened after many people moved from other villages. These villages, like Lemreway, were on the other side of Loch Erisort. This movement of people was part of a big event called the Highland Clearances. During this time, many families in the Scottish Highlands and Islands had to leave their homes.
The families who came to Crossbost gathered their belongings. They traveled across the loch to start new lives. Many of them spent their first winter living in their upturned boats. This shows how strong and determined they were. They worked hard to build a new community in Crossbost.
