History of Crow, Texas
Crow was first called Graham. This was in 1876. The Texas and Pacific Railway built a train station here. A post office opened in Crow in 1906. It stayed open until 1956. The community was named after Wilson Crow. He worked at a local sawmill.
Early Life and Businesses
Crow once had several stores. It even had the last saloon in the county. In 1910, there were two churches. A few years later, the community grew. It had a telephone line and a blacksmith shop. There was also a cotton gin and four other businesses.
Growth and Decline
Crow did not grow much, even though building lots were planned. The sawmills closed when the lumber ran out. Many people moved away. In the 1930s, the population slowly reached 100 residents. Crow then had several homes, a church, and three businesses. The church closed in 1960. By 1970, Crow lost three-quarters of its people.
Recent Changes
More houses were built in the early 1980s. This happened when the highway was made bigger. In 1988, Crow still had several businesses. The population stayed at 25 people from 1990 to 2000.
Local Traditions
The people of Crow have a special tradition. They hold an annual Fourth of July picnic. This picnic has been happening for over 100 years!
Geography of Crow, Texas
Crow is located in southeastern Wood County. It sits where U.S. Highway 80 and Farm to Market Road 778 meet. The Missouri Pacific Railroad also runs through Crow. It is about 14 miles (23 km) southeast of Quitman.
Pine Mills Oilfield
The Pine Mills Oilfield is active in the Crow community. This means that oil is found and taken out of the ground here.
Education in Crow
Crow had its own school in 1910. In 1932, 88 students attended this school. It taught students from first to ninth grade. The school closed its doors in 1960. Today, students in Crow attend schools in the Hawkins Independent School District.
