History of Crown Perth
How it Started in the 1980s
In 1984, the government of Western Australia suggested building a casino complex. It would be on Burswood Island, about 3 kilometers east of Perth city. This area used to be a large landfill (a place where rubbish is buried). This made building difficult because the ground could sink.
The company chosen to build the complex was Tileska Pty Ltd. This was a team-up between Dallas Dempster and Genting Berhad, a casino company from Malaysia. There were some questions about how the company was chosen. However, after a full check, everything was found to be fair.
The first part of the plan was expected to cost A$200 million. It included a casino with 135 tables, a 400-room hotel, a golf course, and a convention center. It also had tennis courts, an outdoor stage, and other cool features. The second part of the plan was to build another hotel for A$100 million later on.
The Western Australian Parliament approved building the resort in March 1985. Everyone hoped it would be ready for the 1987 America's Cup boat race in Perth. Construction was very fast to meet this goal.
When it opened on December 30, 1985, the Burswood Island Casino was the biggest in Australia. It was the third largest in the world. People expected two to three million visitors each year. In its first two months, the casino made A$1 million every day. This was much more than expected! People even had to wait in long lines to get in because it was so popular.
The casino opened early, but the other parts of the resort were still being built. These included the hotel, conference center, and theatre. By January 1987, three million people had visited the complex. The Burswood Property Trust, which owned the complex, sold the hotel part to a Japanese company.
On August 28, 1987, the Burswood Dome opened. This was a huge indoor sports stadium. It was the largest auditorium in the southern hemisphere.
The hotel's opening was delayed, partly because of bad weather. This meant the hotel was not ready for the start of the America's Cup race. The 417-room Burswood Island Hotel opened on October 4, 1987. One lucky guest won A$1.4 million on his first night. This was thought to be the most ever won by one person in an Australian casino at that time.
The Burswood Convention Centre opened on November 20, 1987. The whole Burswood Island complex officially opened on April 8, 1988.
Changes in the 1990s
The casino got bigger in 1990. A special room for high-stakes players was improved in 1995. In 1998, the Burswood Theatre was completely updated. The hotel rooms were also renovated in 1999.
In 1996, pop star Michael Jackson performed three sold-out shows at Burswood Dome. These shows were part of his HIStory World Tour. About 60,000 people came to see him.
The 2000s and Beyond
In 2000, a A$96 million project improved the resort. In 2001 and 2002, the Ruby Room nightclub and Champion's Bar opened inside the casino. The Grand Ballroom also opened. In 2003, Burswood planned to build new homes on empty land nearby.
Burswood also planned to build a second hotel. In 2003, they teamed up with InterContinental Hotels Group. The existing Burswood Resort Hotel became the Burswood InterContinental Hotel. A new 291-room Holiday Inn hotel was built next to the Burswood Theatre.
In 2004, Publishing and Broadcasting Limited took full control of the resort. In 2005, they renamed it the "Burswood Entertainment Complex." The Holiday Inn Burswood opened on August 1, 2005. It was built faster and cheaper than planned. It was called "Perth's first purpose-built hotel in more than 12 years."
In 2006, Burswood opened a new, bigger VIP room for high-stakes players called The Pearl Room. It had amazing views of the Swan River. In 2007, Crown Limited took over the gaming interests, including Burswood. This company is controlled by James Packer. Also in 2007, Burswood opened The Meridian Room. This new gaming room had higher stakes and was open to everyone.
MINQ, a special late-night bar, opened in August 2007. Carbon Sports Bar opened in December 2007. It had a giant 12.5 by 4 meter wide screen. In December 2008, Burswood opened a new poker room. It had plasma screens and its own bar.
In November 2009, Britney Spears performed two shows at the arena. These were her first concerts in Australia. In April 2010, the famous musical Cats performed many shows at Burswood Theatre.
The 2010s and New Hotels
On December 14, 2011, James Packer announced that the Burswood Entertainment Complex would be renamed Crown Perth. In March 2012, the hotels on site were also renamed. This was part of a A$750 million renovation. The InterContinental Burswood became Crown Metropol Perth in June 2012. The Holiday Inn Perth Burswood became Crown Promenade in June 2012.
On August 1, 2012, it was announced that a new 500-room luxury hotel would be built. This hotel, called Crown Towers, cost A$568 million. It was built by Multiplex and opened in December 2016. It is Perth's largest hotel. This brought the total number of hotel rooms at the casino to 1,200.
The Crown Perth Casino
The casino is open 24 hours a day, every day of the week. As of 2012, it is the only casino in Perth, Western Australia. It has up to 2,400 coin-operated game machines. These games include keno, video poker, and games with dice, dominoes, and balls. Many of these games have big jackpots.
The casino also has many table games. These include baccarat, blackjack, roulette, and different types of poker. You can also play casino war, pai gow, money wheel, sic bo, and Caribbean stud.
The Western Australian government supports Crown's plans to increase its gaming options. This is seen as a natural way for the complex to grow. Crown Perth is the only place in Western Australia allowed to have poker machines. In other Australian states, many hotels and clubs have them.
Burswood Park
The park around the casino is called Burswood Park. It used to be a rubbish dump and a cement factory.
When the casino complex was built, the park was also cleaned up. It became a public park in the early 2000s.
The park has beautiful wildflower displays. It also has a heritage trail with different statues. It used to have a public golf course, but that closed in 2013. Now, a large pub called The Camfield is on that site, next to Perth Stadium. Many community events happen in Burswood Park. These include "Movies at Burswood" and "Have a Go Day" for people over 55.

The Dome at Crown Perth was a large indoor arena. It was used for sports and concerts. It used to be called the Burswood Superdome and Burswood Dome. The dome was 8,800 square meters in size. It could seat 13,600 people. The roof was made of fiberglass and was held up by air pressure. It was 35 meters above the ground.
The Dome was famous for hosting the Hopman Cup tennis tournament. This event moved to the Perth Arena in 2013. Many famous music artists performed there. The most people ever at a show was 20,000 for Cliff Richard & The Shadows. Other performers included AC/DC, Kiss, U2, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Pink, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears.
As a sports venue, the Dome was home to the Hopman Cup. It also sometimes hosted Perth Wildcats basketball games. The Dome was also used for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) shows when they toured Australia.
By 2012, there were plans for a new hotel and a state-controlled Perth Stadium nearby. This meant the Dome would be removed. It was planned to make space for more car parking. The government approved its demolition on May 31, 2012. Demolition work started in July 2013. The roof was deflated on June 28, 2013.
