Crown Prince Uiso (Hangul: 의소세자; Hanja: 懿昭世子) was a young Crown Prince of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea. His personal name was Yi Jeong (Hangul: 이정; Hanja: 李琔). He was born on September 27, 1750, and sadly passed away on April 17, 1752, when he was very young.
Uiso was the son of Crown Prince Sado and Crown Princess Consort Hyegyeong. He was also the older brother of King Jeongjo, who later became a very important king. Uiso was the third in line to the throne after his grandfather, King Yeongjo. His Chinese name was Changheung (Hangul: 창흥; Hanja: 昌興).
Early Life
Crown Prince Uiso was the first grandson of King Yeongjo, who was the 21st king of Joseon. His father, Crown Prince Sado, was King Yeongjo's second son. King Yeongjo's first son had passed away young, so Crown Prince Sado became the only male heir.
Uiso's mother, Lady Hyegyeong, came from a well-known royal family. Her father, Hong Bong-han, was an important person in the government.
A Prince's Short Life
Yi Jeong was born at Gyeongchun Hall in Changgyeong Palace in Seoul on September 27, 1750. King Yeongjo had high hopes for his grandson. On May 13, 1751, King Yeongjo officially named Uiso as the next in line to the throne. This meant Uiso was expected to become king one day.
However, Crown Prince Uiso became ill and passed away on April 17, 1752, at Tongmyongjeon. He was only a year and a half old.
Royal Funeral and Burial
Even though he was very young, Crown Prince Uiso received a special state funeral, as ordered by King Yeongjo. His body was buried south of Mt. Ahnhyon in Hanseong. King Yeongjo named his grave "Uiso grave" and wrote special words for his tombstone.
Later, in 1870, his grave was renamed "Uiryong Park." On June 7, 1949, his grave was moved to Wondang in Goyang, where it rests today.
