Crown Prince Hyojang (born April 4, 1719 – died December 16, 1728) was an important figure in the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. His personal name was Yi Haeng. He was the first son of King Yeongjo, who was a powerful ruler.
Even though Crown Prince Hyojang died young, he later became the adoptive father of his half-nephew, who would become the famous King Jeongjo. This happened 34 years after Hyojang's death in 1762.

Life of Crown Prince Hyojang
Early Years
Yi Haeng was born in 1719. His father was Yi Geum, who later became King Yeongjo. His biological mother was Lady Yi of the Hamyang Yi clan. She was a former court lady.
Yi Haeng was born during the reign of his grandfather, King Sukjong. His birth was kept quiet because his grandmother had passed away the year before.
Becoming Crown Prince
In 1720, King Sukjong died. His eldest son, Crown Prince Yi Yun, became King Gyeongjong. King Gyeongjong did not have any children. Because of this, Yi Haeng's father, Prince Yeoning, was named Crown Prince. This meant he was next in line for the throne.
Sadly, Yi Haeng's biological mother, Lady Yi, died the next year.
In 1724, King Gyeongjong passed away. Yi Haeng's father, Yeoning, became King Yeongjo. He was the 21st king of the Joseon Dynasty. After his father became king, Yi Haeng was given the title Prince Gyeongui. In 1725, he was officially named Crown Prince. This made him the future ruler of Joseon.
Marriage and Early Death
In 1726, King Yeongjo chose a wife for his son. She was Lady Jo of the Pungyang Jo clan. She was the daughter of Jo Mun-myeong.
In 1728, the young Crown Prince became ill. He died at Changgyeong Palace when he was only 9 years old. The exact reason for his illness is not known. His death was very sad for King Yeongjo. The King later gave Yi Haeng the special name Hyojang.
His wife, Lady Jo, was later honored as Queen Hyosun. She lived for more than 20 years after his death. They are buried together in the Samneung Cluster in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. Their tombs are known as Yeongneung.
His Legacy After Death
The Birth of a New Heir
In 1735, seven years after Crown Prince Hyojang's death, his half-brother was born. This was Yi Seon, who later became known as Crown Prince Sado. He took Hyojang's place as the new Crown Prince.
However, in 1762, Crown Prince Sado died under sad circumstances. This left his son, Yi San, as the only royal heir. King Yeongjo was worried. He feared that Yi San might not be able to become king because of his father's fate.
An Adoptive Father
To solve this problem, King Yeongjo made an important decision. In February 1764, he declared that Yi San would become the adoptive son of the long-dead Crown Prince Hyojang. This meant Yi San was now officially Hyojang's son.
In 1776, King Yeongjo passed away. Yi San then became King Jeongjo. On the day he became king, he bravely announced that he was the son of Crown Prince Sado. Even so, King Jeongjo respected his grandfather's wishes. He honored his adoptive father, Hyojang, as a king. He gave him the special name Jinjong. Hyojang's wife, the late Crown Princess Hyosun, was also honored as a Queen.
Later, in 1907, Hyojang was given an even higher title. He was named Emperor So by Sunjong of Korea.
