A Look Back in Time
How Cruz Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that 954 people lived in the Cruz barrio at that time.

When the River Flooded
The Río Culebrinas Incident
In May 2019, the Río Culebrinas river overflowed its banks. This caused flooding in Cruz barrio and other nearby areas. Many trees fell, and there were also landslides, which are when dirt and rocks slide down a hill. Some roads had to be closed because of the flooding.
