Cuevas del Silvino facts for kids

The Cuevas del Silvino (which means Silvino Caves) is a cool system of limestone caves found in Guatemala. Imagine huge underground rooms and tunnels carved out of rock! These caves are located in the Izabal area, near the town of Morales. You can find them about 260 kilometers (about 160 miles) from Guatemala City on the road to Puerto Barrios.

This special cave system was officially made a national park in 1972. This means the government decided to protect it so its unique natural features can be preserved for everyone to enjoy and learn from.

What are Limestone Caves?

Limestone caves like Cuevas del Silvino are formed over thousands of years. They start when rainwater mixes with carbon dioxide from the air and soil. This creates a weak acid. This acid then slowly dissolves limestone rock.

How Caves Form

• Rainwater seeps into cracks in the ground.
• As it moves through the rock, it dissolves the limestone.
• Over a very long time, these dissolved areas become larger.
• Eventually, they form tunnels, chambers, and amazing underground spaces.
• Sometimes, water dripping from the ceiling creates cool rock formations. These are called stalactites (hanging down) and stalagmites (growing up from the floor).
