Culebra barrio-pueblo, also known as Culebra Pueblo or Culebra Town, is the main town on the island of Culebra in Puerto Rico. It serves as the administrative center for the island. In 2010, about 462 people lived here.
Like many towns in Spain and Puerto Rico, Culebra Pueblo has a special area called a pueblo. This area usually includes a main square, the town hall, and a Catholic church. Big festivals, known as Fiestas patronales, are held in this central square every year.
The Main Town Square
The main town square, or plaza, is a lively spot for both official events and fun activities. It's a place where people can meet up and hang out from morning until night. Old Spanish laws from the early 1800s, called the Laws of the Indies, said that the plaza should be used for "parties" (celebrations). These laws also stated that the square should be big enough for all the people living nearby.
The laws also suggested that streets close to the plaza should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain. At one time, this area was known by the name Dewey.
Across from the central plaza, you will find the Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen. This is a Roman Catholic church, also known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish. The church is built from concrete and faces towards the east.
A Look at History
Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened under the Treaty of Paris of 1898. In 1899, the U.S. government counted the people living in Puerto Rico. At that time, Culebra barrio-pueblo had a population of 206.
The population of Culebra Pueblo has changed over the years:
- 1900: 206 people

- 1920: 265 people
- 1930: 377 people
- 1940: 472 people
- 1950: 693 people
- 1980: 849 people
- 1990: 707 people

Neighborhoods and Areas
Towns in Puerto Rico are divided into smaller parts called barrios. These barrios are then split into even smaller local areas called sectores (which means sectors in English). The names for these sectors can be different. Some common types include urbanización, reparto, barriada, comunidad, or residencial.
