Cultus Lake is a beautiful lake in British Columbia, Canada. It's also the name of a small community and a fun provincial park! The lake is located in the Fraser Valley, about 11 kilometers (7 miles) south of the Chilliwack River. It's also pretty close to the city of Chilliwack, and about 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of Vancouver. The Sweltzer River actually starts right here at Cultus Lake.

In 1950, this special area became a provincial park, which means it's protected for everyone to enjoy. The park covers a large area of 656 hectares around the lake. Long ago, there was even a sawmill here, but that changed when it became a park in the 1950s.

What's in a Name?

Cultus Lake has an interesting name. For the Sto:lo people, who are the First Nations people of this area, Cultus Lake is a very important place. They used it for special spiritual journeys.

However, the lake was named using a word from Chinook Jargon. This was a trade language used by different groups in the Pacific Northwest. The word "cultus" in Chinook Jargon can mean "bad" or "worthless." But it can also mean "free," "without purpose," or simply "nothing."
