Cumborah is a small town in north-western New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the Walgett Shire area. Cumborah is located close to the famous Lightning Ridge opal fields.

The town is about 36 kilometers (22 miles) from the Castlereagh Highway. It gets its supplies and services from nearby towns. These towns are Lightning Ridge and Walgett, which is about 48 kilometers (30 miles) away.

The road through Cumborah is important for miners. It leads to other nearby opal fields like Glengarry, Grawin, and Sheepyard. Besides opals, people also look for other cool stones here. These include agate, fossils, petrified wood, and topaz. The area around Cumborah is mostly covered by mulga and cypress trees.

Who Lives in Cumborah?

In 2006, Cumborah and the areas around it had 492 people. More than half of the residents were males. About 33 people were Indigenous Australians. Most people (78.5%) were born in Australia.

Many people in Cumborah worked in farming. They raised sheep and cattle, and grew grains. Mining for minerals was also a common job.

Cumborah's Past: A Look Back

Cumborah became an official town in 1896. A police station opened there in 1898 and stayed open until 1934.

The town also had a small mail office starting in 1892. This became a full post office in 1898. It closed down in 1963.

Kids in Cumborah went to school there too. A small school was open from 1899 to 1903. Then, a public school operated from 1904 until 1943.

Telephone services came to Cumborah early on. A telephone office opened in 1901. By 1915, only five people had phones. They could only call Walgett or Dangar Bridge. By 1917, people could call other local towns.

In the early days, people in Cumborah had fun with sports. They played or watched cricket and tennis. Horse racing and special sports days were also popular events.
