Cundiff is a small, unincorporated community in Jack County, Texas, United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live together but it's not officially organized as a city or town. In the year 2000, about 45 people lived in Cundiff.
History of Cundiff
The area where Cundiff is located was first settled in the mid-1850s. One of the very first settlers was a person named Harrell Cundiff.
During the 1860s, many settlers had to leave their homes. This was because of conflicts with Native American groups in the area. After these conflicts ended in the mid-1870s, people began to return to the Cundiff region.
A permanent community was finally established in the early 1890s. In 1891, a man named Walker Moore created a townsite. He divided a large piece of land into many farms. He named the new community Cundiff, likely after the early settler.
Cundiff had its own post office from 1891 until 1918. Around the year 1900, the community also had four businesses. There was a blacksmith shop, where metal items were made or repaired. It also had a cotton gin, which was a machine used to separate cotton fibers from their seeds.
The number of people living in Cundiff stayed around 50 for many years, from 1940 to 1988. By 1990, the population had slightly decreased to 45 people, and it remained that way through 2000.
An important old mail route, the Butterfield Overland Mail, had a stop called Earhart's Station. This station was located just west of Cundiff.
Where is Cundiff Located?
Cundiff is found in the northeastern part of Jack County, Texas. It is located on Farm to Market Road 1810. This road is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northeast of a larger town called Jacksboro.
Education in Cundiff
In the early 1900s, Cundiff had its own school for local children. Today, students from the Cundiff community attend schools that are part of the Jacksboro Independent School District. This school district serves students in the Jacksboro area and nearby communities.
