Curanilahue (pronounced "koo-rah-nee-LAH-weh") is a city and a commune in Chile. A commune is like a local district or area. It is located in the Arauco Province, which is part of the Biobío Region. The name Curanilahue comes from the Mapudungun language. "Cura" means "Stone," and "Nilahue" means "Ford." So, it means "Stone Ford."

People and Population in Curanilahue
Every few years, countries count how many people live there. This is called a census. According to the 2002 census, Curanilahue covers an area of about 994.3 square kilometers. That's a bit larger than a small city!
At that time, 31,943 people lived in Curanilahue.

- 15,828 of them were women.
Most people, about 30,126 (94.3%), lived in the city area. The rest, 1,817 people (5.7%), lived in the countryside. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Curanilahue went down by 5%.

The main leader of the commune is called an alcalde (which is like a mayor). The people of Curanilahue vote for their alcalde every four years. The current alcalde (as of 2021) is Alejandra Burgos Bizama. She is part of the Christian Democratic Party.

Curanilahue is also part of larger areas for national elections. This means its citizens help choose people to represent them in the country's government.
