History of Cut Off
Cut Off got its name from a special canal that was built there. This canal was a "cutoff" from Bayou Lafourche. It went northeast towards Lake Salvador. The canal helped boats travel a shorter distance to New Orleans. The name "Cut Off" comes from the French word La Coupe, which means "The Cut."
Geography of Cut Off
Cut Off is located in the southern part of Lafourche Parish. It sits on both sides of the Bayou Lafourche. To its northwest is the community of Larose. To its south is Galliano.
Highways and Roads
Several main roads run through Cut Off. Louisiana Highway 1 goes through the middle of town, along the west side of Bayou Lafourche. Highway 308 runs along the east side. There is also Highway 3235, which is a four-lane road on the west side of the community.
All these highways connect Cut Off to Larose in the northwest and Galliano in the south. Thibodaux, which is the main town of the parish, is about 37 miles (60 km) northwest. Port Fourchon, a port on the Gulf of Mexico, is about 34 miles (55 km) south.

Cut Off School first opened in 1927. In 1950, the schools in Larose and Cut Off joined together to form Larose-Cut Off High School. Later, in 1966, this high school combined with Golden Meadow High School to create South Lafourche High School.
Libraries and Colleges
The Lafourche Parish Library operates the South Lafourche Library in Galliano. This library also has a Cut Off mailing address. After Hurricane Ida caused damage, the library had to be rebuilt inside.
Students in Lafourche Parish can also attend Fletcher Technical Community College. Delgado Community College also serves the Lafourche Parish area.
