Cymothoe haynae is a beautiful butterfly that lives in parts of Africa. It belongs to the butterfly family called Nymphalidae. These butterflies are sometimes called "brush-footed butterflies" because their front legs are smaller and look like tiny brushes.
This butterfly was first described by a scientist named Hermann Dewitz in 1887. It is also known as Hayne's Glider. The Cymothoe haynae is currently listed as a species of "Least Concern" by the IUCN. This means it is not currently at risk of disappearing.
Where Does the Hayne's Glider Live?
The Hayne's Glider butterfly can be found in several countries across Central and East Africa. These include Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, the DRC, and Uganda.
They usually live in tropical forests. Butterflies play an important role in these ecosystems. They help to pollinate plants as they fly from flower to flower.
Different Kinds of Hayne's Glider
Within the Cymothoe haynae species, there are several different types, called subspecies. These subspecies look a bit different or live in slightly different areas. Scientists give them special names to tell them apart.
Here are the known subspecies of Cymothoe haynae:
- C. h. haynae: This subspecies is found in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
- C. h. diphyia: You can find this one in eastern Cameroon, northern Congo, the Central African Republic, western Uganda, and parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (like Ituri, Ruwenzori, and Kivu). It was named by Karsch in 1894.
- C. h. fumosa: This subspecies lives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Staudinger named it in 1896.
- C. h. superba: This type is found in southern and western Cameroon, as well as Gabon. Aurivillius named it in 1899.
- C. h. vosiana: This subspecies lives in the south-central Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially in the Kasai Valley. Overlaet named it in 1942.
