Cynthia Blum Carroll (born November 13, 1956) is a successful American businesswoman. She is best known for being the chief executive officer (CEO) of Anglo American. This is a major British mining company and one of the biggest producers of platinum in the world.

Education and Early Career

Cynthia Carroll has a strong background in science and business. She earned three different college degrees.

Learning About the Earth

Carroll first studied geology, which is the science of the Earth, rocks, and minerals. Before she became a business leader, she worked as a petroleum geologist for a company called Amoco. For eight years, she searched for gas and oil in states like Colorado, Alaska, and Wyoming.

Her education includes:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from Skidmore College in 1978.
  • A Master of Science degree in Geology from the University of Kansas in 1982.
  • A Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard University in 1989. An MBA is a special degree for people who want to become leaders in business.

A Leader in Global Business

Carroll's career took her to the top of some of the world's largest companies. She became known for her leadership skills and her focus on making workplaces safer.

Working at Alcan

Before joining Anglo American, Carroll worked at a company called Alcan, a major producer of aluminum. She joined in 1989 and worked her way up. By 2002, she was the president and CEO of its Primary Metal Group. She also managed a large division in Ireland.

Leading Anglo American

In 2007, Carroll became the CEO of Anglo American. This was a very important job. She was the first person who was not from South Africa to lead the company. She was also one of only a few women in charge of a company on the FTSE 100, which is a list of the top 100 companies in the United Kingdom.

As CEO, Carroll made some big changes. She focused on improving safety in the company's mines. After some serious accidents in South Africa, she temporarily closed two platinum mines. She made sure that all workers received extra safety training before the mines reopened.

Under her leadership, Anglo American also grew by buying parts of other mining projects around the world, including in Peru, the United States, Australia, and Brazil.

Carroll stepped down as chief executive in 2012. That same year, she was honored by being elected a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
