Cyprien Katsaris was born in Marseille, France. He started playing the piano when he was just four years old. This was in Cameroon, where he spent his early years. His first piano teacher was Marie-Gabrielle Louwerse.
He later studied piano at the Paris Conservatoire. His teachers there included Aline van Barentzen and Monique de la Bruchollerie. Monique de la Bruchollerie was a student of Emil von Sauer, who was taught by the legendary Franz Liszt. For a short time, Katsaris also studied with György Cziffra.
In 1969, Katsaris won the top piano prize at the Conservatoire. He also studied chamber music, which is music for small groups of instruments. He won a top prize for chamber music in 1970.
Katsaris gave his first public concert in Paris on May 8, 1966. He performed a piece called the Hungarian Fantasy by Liszt. He played with the Orchestre Symphonique d'Ile-de-France. Since then, he has performed with many orchestras and conductors around the world.
He was one of the first musicians to record all of Liszt's piano versions of Beethoven's nine symphonies. He has also recorded music by Mozart, Chopin, Grieg, and others. This includes a rare piano version of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde.
In 2001, Katsaris started his own music label called Piano 21. This label releases his recordings. In 2011, he performed a concert in Paris with French singer David Serero.
