Musical Career
Getting Started in Music
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, DJ Class started as a DJ and music producer in the early 1990s. He was a big part of the new Baltimore club music style. He released his first single in 1991 and became known for his music on the Unruly Records label.
Some of his popular early songs were "Wuz Up Baby" (1995) and "Tear da Club Up" (1999). "Tear da Club Up" became a classic Baltimore club song that was played for many years.
Breakthrough Success
In 2000, DJ Class created music for the movie Cecil B. Demented. After releasing another single in 2001, he took a break from making club music. During this time, he produced a gospel hip hop album called The Book of Daniel using the name D. Class.
He returned in 2008 with a new club song called "I'm the Ish." He sent the song to the owner of Unruly Records, who loved it. At first, the song only played on Baltimore radio stations, but it soon became popular in other cities too.
The song's success led to a record deal with Universal Republic Records in 2009. Many famous artists created their own versions, or remixes, of the song. Rapper Lil Jon recorded a remix with DJ Class, and another remix was made with Kanye West. Other artists like Pitbull and Estelle also made remixes.
Chart Performance
In April 2009, "I'm the Ish" was released online. The Lil Jon remix of the song appeared on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart, reaching number 22. It also reached number 26 on the Billboard Rhythmic chart, which tracks songs played on certain radio stations.
That same year, the Baltimore City Paper named DJ Class the Best Club Music Producer. He later released more singles, including "Dance Like a Freak." In 2010, he produced the song "Watagatapitusberry" for Pitbull.
