Becoming DJ Spinderella
Deidra Muriel Roper was born on August 3, 1970. She grew up in Brooklyn, New York City, with four brothers and sisters. From a young age, she loved music. Her father's record collection fascinated her.
Starting Young
Roper began her journey as a DJ when she was just 14 years old. In high school, she learned DJ skills from a local DJ she was dating. Soon after, she started promoting herself as a DJ around Brooklyn. When she was 16, a classmate asked her if she wanted to join an all-female rap group. This classmate knew Hurby "LuvBug" Azor, the group's producer. He arranged for Roper to try out for the group.
Music Career Highlights
Roper met Salt-N-Pepa's producer, Hurby Azor, in 1986. This was right before the group was set to perform at the Westchester Music Festival. The group's first DJ had missed many practices. So, they were looking for someone new. Roper was chosen to be the group's DJ. She took on the name Spinderella. This happened around the time their first album was released. Since she was only 16, her parents had to give permission for her to travel.
Joining Salt-N-Pepa
The trio became one of the most successful female hip-hop groups ever. They released five studio albums. Many of their songs became platinum and gold singles. Spinderella also helped produce several songs on their albums. In 1992, Spinderella appeared in the movie Stay Tuned. In 1993, she rapped on Big Daddy Kane's song "Very Special." This song became a top 40 hit. In 1996, Spinderella was in the movie Kazaam, which starred Shaquille O'Neal.
Beyond the Group
On October 21, 1997, Spinderella opened her own beauty salon. This was the same day Salt-N-Pepa released their last album, Brand New. After this, Spinderella planned to release her own solo album. However, it never came out because their record label stopped working. Salt-N-Pepa broke up in 2002. They got back together in 2007. Spinderella left the group in 2019.
From 2003 to 2006, Spinderella worked in radio. She co-hosted The BackSpin in Los Angeles. This show played old school hip-hop. She also appeared on the VH1 series The Salt N Pepa Show. From 2010 to 2011, she worked at a radio station in Dallas, Texas. Spinderella supports many good causes. She is part of the American Diabetes Association Celebrity Cabinet. She also helps the Saving Our Daughters Mentoring Program. She founded the Spinderella DJ Academy.
Spinderella performed with Salt-N-Pepa at Hip Hop Honors in 2005. This was their first performance together since 1999. In 2007, she was the DJ for The Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav. In 2008, the group performed their hits "Shoop," "Push It," and "Whatta Man" at the BET Hip Hop Awards.
