History
The group, which started with brothers Mr. Walt (born in 1968) and DJ Evil Dee (born in 1971), formed in 1992. They first showed their production skills with DJ Evil Dee's group, Black Moon, on their first song, "Who Got Da Props?" The brothers then produced all the songs for Black Moon's popular first album, Enta Da Stage, in 1993.
After that, Da Beatminerz continued to work with Black Moon's Buckshot and his wider group, Boot Camp Clik. In 1995, a third member, Baby Paul, joined the team. Together, they produced every song on Smif-N-Wessun's first album, Dah Shinin'. They kept working with other Boot Camp members like Heltah Skeltah and O.G.C. in 1996, making many beats for their first albums, Nocturnal and Da Storm.
In the late 1990s, Da Beatminerz started working with even more popular hip-hop artists. Some of these included Afu-Ra, Black Star, Eminem, Flipmode Squad, M.O.P., De La Soul, and O.C..
Also in 1996, Da Beatminerz were featured on a special music collection called America is Dying Slowly. This CD was created by the Red Hot Organization to help spread awareness about a health issue among African American men. Many other famous hip-hop artists like Biz Markie, Wu-Tang Clan, and Fat Joe were also on the album. The music magazine The Source called the CD "a masterpiece."
By 2001, the group had grown to five members, with producers Rich Blak and Chocolate Ty joining Baby Paul, Evil Dee, and Mr. Walt. That same year, Da Beatminerz released their own first album, Brace 4 Impak. It came out on the popular independent record label Rawkus Records. The album featured many guest artists, including Royce Da 5'9", Black Moon, Talib Kweli, and Naughty by Nature. The main song from the album, "Take That," became a big hip-hop hit in 2001, reaching the Top 5 on the Hot Rap Singles chart.
By 2004, the group went back to its original two members, Evil Dee and Mr. Walt. They then released their second album, Fully Loaded w/ Statik, on Copter Records. In recent years, Da Beatminerz have continued to create beats for artists like Akrobatik, Big Daddy Kane, Dilated Peoples, KRS-One, and Wordsworth. Today, Da Beatminerz run their own internet radio station. They are also planning to produce all the songs for Black Moon's next album, 'Dark Side Of The Moon'.
