Dadu (Sindhi and Urdu: دادو) is a lively city in Sindh, Pakistan. It is the main city of Dadu District. You can find Dadu on the west side of the River Indus. The city is divided into four smaller areas called Union Councils. Dadu is especially known for its delicious tea!
Dadu is one of the biggest cities in Sindh Province. It is the 11th largest in Sindh and the 52nd largest in all of Pakistan. In 2017, about 171,191 people lived there. Dadu is about 100 miles (160 km) north of Hyderabad, which is Sindh's second-biggest city.
History of Dadu
The very early history of Dadu is not fully known. People generally believe that Dadu started as a small village. It was founded by a person named Syed Dad Muhammad Shah. He was also known as Dadu Shah.
How Dadu Got Its Name
Syed Dad Muhammad Shah was a powerful religious leader. He was also a big landowner. He had strong connections with the rulers of the Kalhora dynasty (1701–1783). People called him Daderah.
Some historians think Dadu's old name was Marakhpur. This area was taken over by Yar Muhammad Kalhoro. This happened in the early 1700s. Today, Marakhpur is just a small part of Dadu City.
There is another idea about Dadu's name. A famous saint and poet named Dadu Dayal lived from 1544 to 1603. He was from Gujrat, India. He started a new group of yogis called the Dadu-Panth.
Dadu Dayal visited Sindh and stayed there for a long time. His followers were called Dadunavasi. Two of his followers, Dayo Ram and Sanat Bhagat Ram, were from Dadu. Because of this, Dadu became known as the town of the Dadunavasi. This is how it might have gotten the name Dadu.
Dadu's Growth and Decline
During the Kalhora dynasty, Dadu and the areas around it became very successful. The rulers improved the way water was brought to farms. They built new canals to help farming. This made Dadu an important place for trade and agriculture.
However, when the Kalhora rulers moved their capital to Hyderabad, Dadu became less important. During the Talpur dynasty rule, Dadu's importance continued to decline. The Talpur rulers focused more on cities like Hyderabad, Khairpur Mirs, and Mirpur Khas. They did not pay much attention to Dadu and its nearby areas.
