A Look at Daguao's History

How Daguao Became Part of the U.S.

After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave up control of Puerto Rico. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.

In 1899, the U.S. government took a count of the people in Puerto Rico. They found that Daguao and a nearby area called Río Abajo had a total of 1,099 residents.

Nature and the Naval Base in Daguao

The old Roosevelt Roads Naval Base is located close to Daguao. A large part of Daguao, about 40% of its land, is now protected as a conservation area. This means it's kept safe for nature.

This special natural area is home to many different types of environments. You can find wetlands, places where rivers meet the sea (estuaries), and forests made of mangrove trees. There are also beautiful coral reefs, various marine habitats, riverbanks, and dry forests. The Los Machos wetland in Daguao is very important because it contains 10% of all the mangrove forests left in Puerto Rico.
