Geography and Sinkholes

Daisetta is a small city, covering about 1.5 square miles (3.8 square kilometers) of land.

What is a Salt Dome?

Daisetta is built on top of something called a salt dome. Imagine a huge, underground bubble of salt that has slowly pushed its way up through layers of rock over millions of years. These salt domes can be very stable, but sometimes they can cause interesting geological features.

Famous Sinkholes

Sometimes, when these salt domes collapse, or when companies drill for oil nearby, the ground above can sink. This creates large holes called sinkholes. Daisetta has experienced a few of these.

A sinkhole formed in 1969, and then a larger one grew from it in 1981. This 1981 sinkhole is now a lake. It grew to be about 250 feet (76 meters) wide and 30 feet (9 meters) deep.

Another large sinkhole appeared in 2008. People in the area nicknamed it "Sinkhole de Mayo." It was about 600 feet (183 meters) long, 525 feet (160 meters) wide, and up to 150 feet (46 meters) deep. Experts think it might have been caused by the salt dome collapsing, possibly because of oil drilling in the area. Even after it stopped growing, officials watched it closely to make sure residents were safe.
