Dalgona coffee is a super popular drink that became famous all over the world! It's made by whipping together instant coffee, sugar, and hot water until it becomes a thick, creamy foam. This foam is then spooned over cold or hot milk. Sometimes, people add toppings like cocoa powder, crushed cookies, or honey.
This drink became very popular on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people were staying home and started making videos of themselves whipping this coffee by hand. The name "dalgona coffee" comes from dalgona, a type of Korean sugar candy. The coffee foam looks and tastes a bit like this candy, even though it doesn't usually contain actual dalgona candy.

How Dalgona Coffee Started
The First Idea
The idea for this whipped coffee drink came from a man named Leong Kam Hon. He used to build ships in Macau. After an accident, he opened a coffee shop called 'Hon Kee' in Coloane.
In 1997, a couple of tourists asked him to make a special coffee. He created the whipped drink for them. It didn't become famous right away.
A Movie Star's Favorite
In 2004, the famous actor Chow Yun-fat visited Hon Kee café. He loved the whipped coffee so much! His praise brought the first international attention to the drink. People started coming to the café asking for "Chow Yun-fat coffee." Mr. Leong himself called his special drink "hand beaten coffee."
How It Got Its Name
The name "dalgona coffee" was given by a South Korean actor, Jung Il-woo. In January 2020, he tried the drink at Hon Kee café while filming a TV show. He said it tasted like dalgona, which is a Korean honeycomb candy.
Dalgona Coffee Goes Viral
Spreading During the Pandemic
After the TV show aired, dalgona coffee quickly became a hit in South Korea. Many Koreans started making it at home during the social distancing rules. People even called it the "quarantine drink."
The #DalgonaCoffeeChallenge
Soon, homemade dalgona coffee videos spread on South Korean YouTube channels. Then, it went super viral on TikTok in early March 2020. People loved watching the calming videos of others making the coffee. Even though it started as a homemade drink, many coffee shops in South Korea and the U.S. began adding it to their menus.
It's important to know that you can't make dalgona coffee with regular ground coffee beans. Instant coffee works best because of how its granules are dried. This helps create the thick, foamy topping.
Similar Whipped Drinks
Dalgona coffee is similar to other whipped coffee drinks from around the world.
- Indian Phenti Hui Coffee: This drink is also made by whipping coffee, sugar, and water. The main difference is that with phenti hui coffee, the milk is poured on top of the whipped coffee mix. For dalgona coffee, the foam is spooned on top of the milk.
- Greek Frappé Coffee: This popular cold coffee drink started in Greece in 1957. It's made by shaking or whipping instant coffee with water. It can be served hot or cold.
