Daliah Lavi (born Daliah Lewinbuk or Levenbuch, 12 October 1942 – 3 May 2017) was a talented Israeli actress, singer, and model. She became famous for her roles in many European and American movies. Later, she also had a very successful singing career in Germany.
Early Life
Daliah Lewinbuk was born in Shavei Tzion, which was then called the British Mandate of Palestine. Today, this area is Israel. Her mother was from a German-Jewish family, and her father was from a Russian-Jewish family.
When Daliah was 10 years old, she met the famous actor Kirk Douglas. He was in Israel filming a movie called The Juggler. Daliah told him she wanted to be a dancer. Kirk Douglas helped convince her parents to send her to Stockholm, Sweden, to study ballet.
However, Daliah found the cold climate in Sweden difficult. She decided to stop dancing and returned to Israel. There, she started working as a model. She also served her country as a goodwill ambassador. This meant she represented her country in a positive way.
Career Highlights
Daliah Lavi's first movie was in 1955. It was a Swedish film called Hemsöborna
. Her acting career really took off in 1960. She began appearing in many movies made in Europe and America. Daliah was very good at languages. She acted in films in German, French, Italian, Spanish, and English.She worked with Kirk Douglas again in her first American movie. This was Two Weeks in Another Town (1962). She also starred in Il demonio (1963), a film about witch hunts. Daliah thought this was her best acting performance. She also appeared in La Frusta e il corpo (1963).
In 1966, Daliah acted alongside Dean Martin in The Silencers. This was the first movie in the Matt Helm spy series. She also played a role in Lord Jim (1965). In 1965, she was in Ten Little Indians. This was a mystery film based on a book by Agatha Christie. She also had a part in the James Bond movie Casino Royale (1967).
Later, a record producer named Jimmy Bowien discovered Daliah. She then started a very successful singing career in Germany. She sang a type of popular German music called Schlager. Some of her most famous songs were "Oh, wann kommst du?", "Willst du mit mir gehn?", and "C'est ça, la vie (So ist das Leben)". Her song "Jerusalem" was also popular in Australia in 1971.
Later Years and Death
Daliah Lavi passed away on 3 May 2017, when she was 74 years old. She died in Asheville, North Carolina, in the United States. Her funeral and burial took place in Israel, her home country.
