History of Damar

How Damar Started

Damar was founded in 1888. It grew up along the Union Pacific Railroad, which was important for travel and trade back then. The town was started by a group of French Canadians who had moved from Canada to Kansas as early as 1871. They settled on farms in the area. People say the town was named after D.M. Marr, who owned the land where Damar was built.

Early Buildings and Businesses

In 1894, the local post office, which was called Enfield Post Office, moved to Damar. This made it easier for people to send and receive mail.

A very important building in Damar is the St. Joseph Catholic Church. It was built in 1912 and is a beautiful old church. In 2005, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's recognized as a special historical site.

By 1920, Damar was a busy little town! It had places like grain elevators, stores that sold farm equipment, a hardware store, and even a lumber yard. There were also grocery stores, a barbershop, a bank, and an opera hall where people could watch shows. The Knights of Columbus, a community group, built the township hall in 1922.
