Damietta Governorate (Arabic: محافظة دمياط Muḥāfẓet Dumyat) is one of the many governorates in Egypt. A governorate is like a state or a province. It is located in the northeastern part of Egypt, close to the Mediterranean Sea.
This area is home to about 1.5 million people. The main city and capital of the governorate is Damietta. This region is well-known for its farms and special industries.

What Makes Damietta Special?
Damietta Governorate is famous for a few things. It has many guava farms. You can also see lots of palm trees stretching from Ras El Bar in the east to Gamasa in the west.
Farming and Exports
Every year, Damietta exports millions of palm trees to other countries. Some of these countries include Greece and China.
Besides palm trees, farmers in Damietta grow many other crops. These include wheat, maize (corn), cotton, rice, potatoes, lemons, grapes, and tomatoes.
Local Products and Tourism
The governorate is also known for its delicious sweets. They also pack sardines and make a special kind of cheese called Domiati cheese.
Ras El Bar is a very old and popular summer resort in Egypt. It's a great place to visit because it's where the Nile River meets the Mediterranean Sea.
People Living in Damietta
In 2015, most people in Damietta Governorate lived in the countryside. About 38.7% of the population lived in cities.
There were about 1,330,843 people living in the governorate. Out of these, 815,244 people lived in rural areas. The remaining 515,599 people lived in urban areas.
Damietta's Furniture Industry
The city of Damietta is very famous for its skilled carpenters. These craftspeople make beautiful furniture.
Their furniture is sold not only in Egypt but also across the Middle East, Europe, and the USA. A huge part of the governorate's money, about 80%, comes from making and selling furniture.
