Guavas are a type of plant that belongs to the Psidium group. This group is part of the Myrtaceae family. There are about 100 different kinds, or species, of guavas. These plants are usually tropical shrubs or small trees.

Guavas originally came from Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America. Today, you can find them in many tropical and some subtropical areas. This is because their fruits are delicious and can be eaten.

What is a Guava Fruit?

A guava is also the name for the fruit that grows on these plants. It's a type of berry. There are many different kinds of guava fruits. The most common one is called the apple guava (Psidium guajava). This type is so popular that when people say "guava," they usually mean the apple guava.

Some guavas have red flesh and are sometimes called maroon guavas. Guavas are very healthy! For example, 100 grams of guava has about 200 milligrams of Vitamin C. This means guavas have five times more Vitamin C than oranges.
