Dana James Boente (born February 7, 1954) is an American lawyer. He has held several important roles in the U.S. government. From 2018 to 2020, he was the top lawyer for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He also served as the main federal prosecutor for Eastern Virginia. For a short time in 2017, he was the Acting United States Attorney General, which is the top legal officer in the U U.S. government.

Early Life and School
Dana Boente was born in Carlinville, Illinois in 1954. He went to Saint Louis University. In 1976, he earned a degree in business. He then got his Master's degree in business in 1977. Later, he studied law at the Saint Louis University School of Law. He became a lawyer in 1982.
A Career in Law
Boente started his legal career in 1982. He worked for a judge in Illinois. In 1984, he joined the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice. This department handles legal cases about taxes.
Working as a U.S. Attorney
In 2001, Boente became an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Virginia. A U.S. Attorney is a lawyer who represents the U.S. government in court. They work to uphold federal laws.
In 2012, President Barack Obama chose Boente to be the U.S. Attorney for Eastern Virginia. He held this job until 2018. During this time, he was involved in a case about a former Virginia governor. Boente famously said, "No one is above the law." This means everyone, even high officials, must follow the rules.
The United States Supreme Court later reviewed the governor's case. They decided that the instructions given to the jury were too broad. Because of this, the charges against the governor were dropped.
Serving as Acting Attorney General
In 2017, President Donald Trump asked Boente to be the Acting United States Attorney General. This happened after the previous Acting Attorney General left the role. Boente served in this top legal position for a short time.
When Jeff Sessions became the official Attorney General, Boente took on a new role. He became the Acting United States Deputy Attorney General. This is the second-highest legal position in the U.S. government.
Later in 2017, Boente announced he would leave his roles at the Department of Justice.
Joining the FBI
In January 2018, Dana Boente was named the General Counsel for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This means he was the chief lawyer for the entire FBI. He advised the FBI Director, Christopher A. Wray, on legal matters.
He held this important position until he resigned in June 2020.

Dana Boente has lived in Northern Virginia since 1984.
