Daniel Chopra's Early Life
Daniel Chopra was born in Stockholm, Sweden. His mother was Swedish, and his father was Indian. When he was seven years old, Daniel moved to India. He was raised there by his grandparents. Daniel showed great talent for golf from a young age. He won the All-India Junior Golf Championship when he was just 14.
Daniel's Professional Golf Career
Daniel Chopra became a professional golfer in 1992. For several years, from 1996 to 2002, he played on the European Tour. Sometimes, he had to work hard to keep his spot on the tour. In 2004, he joined the PGA Tour in the United States.
Breaking Records on the Nationwide Tour
In 2004, Daniel won the Henrico County Open on the Nationwide Tour. This tour is a step below the PGA Tour. In this win, Daniel set a new record for the tour. He shot an amazing 30-under-par score of 258 over 72 holes. This record stood for 20 years! Another Swedish golfer, Tim Widing, finally broke it in April 2024.
Winning on the PGA Tour
Daniel Chopra achieved his first big win on the PGA Tour in 2007. He won the Ginn sur Mer Classic at Tesoro. Just two PGA Tour events later, he won again! This time, it was the Mercedes-Benz Championship, which starts the golf season.
On January 13, 2008, Daniel reached his highest ranking ever. He was ranked 60th in the Official World Golf Ranking. After these two big wins, Daniel's career had its ups and downs. He played on both the PGA Tour and the second-tier tour (which was then called the Nationwide Tour).
Challenges and Comebacks
The 2010 season was tough for Daniel. He only made the cut in 8 out of 28 PGA Tour events. This meant he lost his PGA Tour card. But Daniel didn't give up! In 2011, he won the Fresh Express Classic at TPC Stonebrae on the Nationwide Tour. This win helped him get his PGA Tour card back for 2012.
However, he struggled again in 2012 and went back to the newly named Web.com Tour for 2013. He played well enough to earn his PGA Tour card again for 2014. But in 2013–14, he only made the cut in 2 out of 16 events. He lost his PGA Tour card once more.
In 2015, Daniel had limited chances to play on the PGA or Web.com Tours. So, he decided to try the Asian Tour's qualifying school, and he won!
