Exploring Danielson's Historic Center
The town of Danielson is located where the Quinebaug and Five Mile Rivers meet. In the early 1800s, Danielson started to grow because of mills across the Quinebaug River in Brooklyn. These mills built homes for their workers in the Danielson area.
How the Railroad Shaped Danielson
A big change happened in the 1830s when the Norwich and Worcester Railroad came through Danielson. The Danielson Manufacturing Company also started up near the river. The railroad was very important for the growth of the town's main business area. This area developed along Main Street, both north and south of where the railroad tracks were. Today, you won't find any old railroad buildings there. Instead, there are mostly parking lots.
Buildings and Architecture in the District
The historic district covers about 20 acres (8 hectares). It has more than 40 buildings. Most of these are commercial buildings, meaning they were used for businesses. They are usually one to three stories tall and made of brick or stone. Most were built between 1850 and 1920. Some newer buildings, like the post office, were built to match the older styles, especially the Colonial Revival look.
The district also has some important non-commercial buildings:
- The Bugbee Memorial Library, built in 1901, has a grand Classical Revival style.
- The Westfield Congregational Church, built in 1855, shows off the Italianate style.
- The Danielson Methodist Church, built in 1902, has a Gothic Revival design.
- Killingly's town hall is also in the district. It's in an old music hall from 1876, which also has a Gothic Revival style.
