Danish wine is wine that is made in Denmark. Even though Denmark is quite far north, it has started to grow grapes and make wine. This has become possible thanks to a warmer climate and new laws that allowed wine production in 1999.

Growing Grapes in Denmark

Denmark is located far north, but it has been growing grapes and making wine since the late 1900s. This became easier because of global warming, which made the climate a bit warmer. Also, in 1999, it became legal to produce wine in Denmark.

Today, you can find small vineyards in different parts of Denmark. These include Jutland, Lolland, Funen, and Northern Zealand. Farmers there grow various types of grapes. The main types are Cabernet Cortis and Cabernet Cantor.

In 2006, there were about twenty vineyards in Denmark. Together, they produced around 40,000 bottles of wine. This shows that Danish wine production is still quite small.

A Danish wine even won an award! In 2007, a special sparkling wine called Dons Cuvée from Skæresøgård Vin won a silver medal. This happened at the Effervescents du Monde wine competition. The wine was from the year 2006.

Wines from Other Fruits

Denmark has a long history of making wines from other fruits, not just grapes. Two popular types are cherry wines, called kirsebærvin in Danish, and apple wines, called æblevin.

The climate in Denmark is perfect for growing these fruits. The country has many different kinds of unique fruit cultivars, which are special types of plants.

One well-known Danish fruit product is Cherry Heering. This is a cherry liquor wine that is famous around the world. Since 2006, new producers at Frederiksdal Manor on Lolland have been trying new ways to make cherry wines. Their efforts have received a lot of praise.
