Danlí is a city and a municipality in Honduras. It is one of the most populated municipalities in the country. You can find it about 92 kilometers (57 miles) southeast of Tegucigalpa, the capital city. Danlí is located in the El Paraíso region of Honduras.
The city is famous for growing cigar tobacco and corn (also known as maize). It sits at an elevation of 814 meters (2,673 feet) above sea level. In 2023, the city of Danlí had a population of about 80,200 people. The entire municipality, which includes the city and surrounding rural areas, had about 233,789 people in 2023.
Nature and Wildlife
Danlí is home to some unique plants and animals. The official flower of the city is the napoleón. This is a type of bougainvillea, known for its bright and colorful flowers.
The official tree is the jiñicuado, also called bursera simaruba. This tree is super easy to grow! People say if you just stick a branch into the ground, it will start to grow roots.
The official mammal of Danlí is the howler monkey. These monkeys are an endangered species. They live in the lush, broad-leaf forests found in the Apagüíz and Apapuerta mountains near the city.
You can also find pine forests around Danlí. Usually, pine trees grow on the north-facing slopes of mountains. The broad-leaf forests, where the howler monkeys live, are often on the south-facing slopes.
Other animals living near Danlí include deer and many kinds of birds. Some of these birds are the oropendula, parrots, and mynah birds. People living in the countryside near Danlí have even reported seeing jaguars and quetzals, which are very special birds.
A well-known natural landmark is the Apagüíz mountain. It has a large rock sticking out near its top. You can see this impressive rock from the southern parts of Danlí city.
Religious Life
Since 2017, Danlí has been an important center for the Roman Catholic Church. It is the main city for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Danlí. A diocese is like a special church district led by a bishop. This diocese is part of the larger Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa.
