Starting His Career
Danny Mills started his football journey at Norwich City. He grew up playing in their youth teams. He found it hard to get a regular spot in the main team.
In March 1998, he moved to Charlton Athletic. He helped them get promoted to the Premier League. This happened after a very exciting play-off final against Sunderland. Charlton won the game 7–6 in a penalty shootout after a 4–4 draw.
Time at Leeds United
In June 1999, Mills joined Leeds United. He was part of the team that reached the semi-finals of the 2000–01 UEFA Champions League. This was a big achievement for the club. His first Champions League game was a 4–0 loss to Barcelona.
During the 2003–04 season, Mills played for Middlesbrough on loan. He helped Middlesbrough win their first major trophy, the 2004 Football League Cup final.
After Leeds United was relegated from the Premier League, Mills moved to Manchester City. He signed a five-year contract with them.
Playing for Manchester City
Mills played his first game for Manchester City in August 2004. It was a 1–1 draw against Fulham. He played in most games during his first season.
In March 2005, the manager changed, and Mills was not playing as much. He got his spot back at the start of the 2005–06 season. On October 2, 2005, he scored his only goal for Manchester City. It was a powerful shot from about 23 meters against Everton.
A month later, he got a shin injury. This kept him out of 15 games. During this time, a young player named Micah Richards started playing well. Richards took over as the main right-back. After this, Mills only played five more games that season.
In September 2006, he joined Hull City on a two-month loan. He later returned to Manchester City. In 2007, he went back to his old club, Charlton, on another loan.
In January 2008, he joined Derby County on loan. However, he got injured in only his second game for them. He returned to Manchester City soon after. On July 1, 2009, his contract with Manchester City ended. On August 7, 2009, Danny Mills announced he was retiring from football. This was shared during a radio show on BBC Radio 5 Live.
Playing for England
After playing very well for Leeds United, Danny Mills was called up to the England squad in 2001. He played his first international game on May 25, 2001. He came on as a substitute in a friendly match against Mexico.
His first game starting for England was on March 27, 2002, against Italy. At the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Mills became England's first-choice right-back. This happened because Gary Neville was injured. Mills played every minute of England's five matches in the tournament.
