History of Dantumadiel
The first time Dantumadiel was mentioned was in a document from 1242. Back then, it was called Donthmadeil. It was part of a larger area known as the Winninghe district. This district was the northern part of Oostergo.
How Dantumadiel Was Governed
In the past, Dantumadiel was a type of local government called a grietenij. A grietenij was led by a grietman. This grietman was like a mayor. They had their office in the towns of Rinsumageast and Dantumawâld.
In 1851, a new law was made in the Netherlands. This law changed all grietenijen into modern municipalities. From then on, these municipalities were led by a mayor, just like today.
