Building the Airport
Plans for this amazing airport were approved in April 2011. Construction began soon after. The whole project cost about 1.58 billion Chinese yuan, which is a lot of money (around US$255 million).
The airport officially opened its doors on September 16, 2013. The very first flight was Air China flight 4215. It was an Airbus A319 plane carrying 118 passengers. This flight came from Chengdu, a big city in China.
Before the airport opened, traveling from Daocheng to Chengdu took two days by bus. Now, thanks to the airport, the journey takes only one hour! This makes it much easier for people to visit Daocheng and the beautiful Yading Nature Reserve.
Airport Features
Daocheng Yading Airport has one runway. It is 4,200 m (13,800 ft) long and 45 m (148 ft) wide. That's a very long runway!
The airport also has a terminal building that is 5,000 m2 (54,000 sq ft) in size. This building is quite interesting because it is shaped like a flying saucer! Inside, there are two aerobridges. These are like special walkways that connect the terminal directly to the airplane.
The airport is designed to handle many travelers. It can welcome up to 280,000 passengers every year.
