Dariush Shayegan (Persian: داریوش شایگان; 24 January 1935 – 22 March 2018) was an important thinker from Iran and the Near East. He was known for his ideas about how different cultures, especially Eastern and Western ones, could understand each other.

Life and Education

Dariush Shayegan was born in Tabriz, Iran. His father was from Azerbaijan and his mother was from Georgia. He went to boarding school in Great Britain when he was a teenager. Later, he lived in Geneva, where he studied French literature, philosophy, and political science.

He also studied Sanskrit, an ancient language from India. Shayegan then went to Sorbonne University in Paris, France, to continue his studies. He became a professor at the Tehran University, teaching about Indian religions and Sanskrit. Besides his native Persian, he could write in French and English. He also spoke Georgian, Russian, and Turkish very well.

Ideas and Contributions

Shayegan wrote many important books about how Eastern and Western cultures are different and how they can talk to each other. He believed it was important for different ways of thinking to have a "dialogue," meaning they should communicate and learn from each other.
