Near East facts for kids
The Near East is a name for a large area of land. It is often used by archaeologists, geographers, and historians. This term describes a region that is very close to Europe. It includes parts of what we now call the Middle East.
Why Do We Call It the Near East?
The name Near East became popular in the 1890s. At that time, countries in Europe were very interested in two different "eastern" regions. One was the "Far East," where the Sino-Japanese War happened in 1894–1895. The other was the "Near East," where some difficult events were taking place.
A British archaeologist named D.G. Hogarth helped to explain what the "Near East" meant. In 1902, he wrote a book called The Nearer East. This book described the area as including countries like Albania, Montenegro, southern Serbia, and Bulgaria. It also included Greece, Egypt, all the lands of the Ottoman Empire, the entire Arabian Peninsula, and the western parts of Iran.
