Darrel Brown's Running Career

Early Success and Youth Records

Darrel started his career with amazing wins. He earned the Austin Sealy Trophy twice. This award is for the best athlete at the CARIFTA Games. He won it in 1999 and 2000.

He was the first runner to win both the 100 and 200 metres races two years in a row. This was in the "Youth" age group. When he moved to the "junior" age group in 2001, he kept winning. He won the 100 metres for three years straight, from 2001 to 2003. No other athlete had done that before!

Shining on the World Stage

Darrel also did very well in big international competitions. At the 2000 World Junior Championships, he came in fourth place. This was for both the 100 metres and the 4 x 100 metres relay race.

On April 14, 2001, he set a new World Youth Record for the 100 metres. His time was an incredible 10.24 seconds. After this, he won gold medals at the 2001 World Youth Championships and the 2002 World Junior Championships.

In 2002, he also won a bronze medal in the 4 × 100 metres relay race. He even helped the senior team win a silver medal in the relay at the 2001 World Championships.

Breaking Records and Winning Medals

In 2003, Darrel competed at the World Championships. He finished second in the 100 metres, right behind Kim Collins. This earned him a silver medal. During the quarter-finals of this event, he set a new junior world record with a time of 10.01 seconds.

He also won a silver medal in the relay at the 2003 Pan American Games. Plus, he took home a gold medal at the 2003 Central American and Caribbean Championships.

Running Under 10 Seconds

In June 2005, Darrel achieved a huge milestone. He ran the 100 metres in 9.99 seconds. This meant he had broken the 10-second barrier, a very rare achievement for sprinters.

At the 2005 World Championships, he made it to the semi-finals. In the relay event, he and the Trinidad and Tobago team won another silver medal. They set a new national record with a time of 38.10 seconds. He also won two gold medals at the 2005 Central American and Caribbean Championships.

Darrel continued to compete in major events. He won another individual gold medal at the 2008 Central American and Caribbean Championships.
