Darrell Walker's Basketball Journey
Early Life and College Play
Darrell Walker grew up in Chicago, Illinois, where he went to Corliss High School. After high school, he continued his basketball journey in college. He played for Westark Community College, which is now known as the University of Arkansas–Fort Smith. Later, he moved on to play for the University of Arkansas.
Becoming an NBA Player
In 1983, Darrell Walker was chosen by the New York Knicks in the NBA draft. He was the 12th player picked in the first round! He played in the NBA for ten years, joining five different teams. These teams included the Knicks, the Denver Nuggets, the Washington Bullets, the Detroit Pistons, and the Chicago Bulls.
Darrell Walker was a really good player. In 1984, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie team. This means he was one of the best new players in the league that year. Throughout his career, he was known for being great at getting assists (passing the ball to a teammate who scores) and steals (taking the ball from an opponent).
His best season was in 1989–90 when he played for the Washington Bullets. That year, he averaged 9.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game. This shows he was a very all-around player. In his final season, he achieved a huge goal: he won an NBA championship with the Chicago Bulls in 1993.
Darrell Walker: From Player to Coach
After his playing days, Darrell Walker started a new career as a basketball coach. He has coached both NBA and WNBA teams.
Coaching in the NBA and WNBA
Walker was the head coach for the Toronto Raptors for a season and a half. He was their second coach ever! Later, in 2000, he became the interim head coach for the Washington Wizards. This was a special moment because he was the first coach ever to be called up from a minor league (the CBA) to coach an NBA team.
That same year, he also coached in the WNBA. He became the interim head coach for the Washington Mystics. After these head coaching roles, he worked as an assistant coach for several NBA teams. These included the New Orleans Hornets, the Detroit Pistons, and the New York Knicks.
Coaching College Teams
In 2016, Darrell Walker became the head coach at Clark Atlanta University. In just two seasons, his team had an amazing record of 45 wins and only 18 losses. They even won a conference tournament championship! His team also made it to the NCAA Division II tournament twice.
Then, in March 2018, Walker was named the head men's basketball coach at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He continues to lead the Little Rock Trojans today.
