The Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) is a group of colleges and universities in the Midwest and Southeast that compete in sports. It is part of Division I of the NCAA. This means the schools are at the highest level of college sports. Their football teams play in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), which is one of two levels for Division I football. The OVC has 11 member schools. Seven of these schools have football teams that play in the conference.

History of the OVC
The idea for the Ohio Valley Conference started in 1941. Athletic directors from Murray State, Eastern Kentucky, and Western Kentucky first thought of creating a regional sports group. World War II put these plans on hold.
In 1948, the idea came back to life. These three schools joined with Louisville, Morehead State, and Evansville to form the OVC. From the very beginning, the presidents of the schools made the rules for the OVC. This was different from many other sports conferences.
Leading the Way in Fairness
The OVC was one of the first conferences to allow Black athletes to play. In 1958, Morehead State signed Marshall Banks, the conference's first Black athlete. Other OVC schools soon followed. For many years, the OVC was special because it included Tennessee State University, a historically Black university (HBCU). Most other HBCUs in Division I were in different conferences.
The OVC has also been a leader in creating more sports chances for women. The conference started adding championships for women in 1977. This was several years before the NCAA began to do the same. Since 2009, Beth DeBauche has been the Commissioner of the OVC. She is one of only a few women who lead Division I conferences.
Promoting Good Sportsmanship
Sometimes, when colleges are close to each other, fans can get too excited during games. The OVC worked hard to control this. In 1995, the OVC created the first "Sportsmanship Statement" in college sports. This statement set rules for fair play, good behavior, and respect for opponents. Since then, the OVC has also given out awards for good sportsmanship to individuals, teams, and schools.
Changes in Membership
The OVC started with six schools. By 2011, it grew to 12 schools, which was its largest size ever. After the 2020–21 school year, the OVC had 10 members. Some founding schools, like Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State, left to join another conference.
In 2022, the OVC lost three more members. Austin Peay, a football school, left for the ASUN conference. Belmont, which did not have a football team, joined the Missouri Valley Conference. Murray State, another founding member, also left for the Missouri Valley Conference. Murray State's football team stayed in the OVC for the 2022 season. This helped the OVC keep its spot in the FCS playoffs.
In July 2022, the OVC welcomed new schools. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (Little Rock) and the University of Southern Indiana joined. These schools were moving up from NCAA Division II. Lindenwood University, also moving from D-II, joined with its football team.
In 2023, the OVC and the Big South Conference decided to combine their football teams. They now play together as the OVC–Big South Football Association. This helps both conferences have strong football competition.
The OVC also added men's soccer as a championship sport in March 2023. Several schools joined to play men's soccer in the OVC. On May 12, 2023, Western Illinois University joined the OVC for most sports. Its football team joined in 2024.
OVC Digital Network
In August 2012, the OVC started the OVC Digital Network. This was a website that showed live sports games. Students often helped produce these broadcasts. The network showed games for many sports, like baseball, basketball, and football. It also had coaches' shows and old games.
In its first two years, the network had over 600,000 views of more than 1,400 events. In the 2018–19 school year, all the games that were on the OVC Digital Network moved to ESPN+.
