Darren Craig Lowe (born October 13, 1960) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He also used to be the head coach for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's ice hockey team.
Darren played 8 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Pittsburgh Penguins. This was during the 1983–84 season. Most of his playing career, from 1983 to 1991, was spent in other leagues. He also played for the Canadian national team at the 1984 Winter Olympics. After he stopped playing, Lowe coached at the University of Toronto from 1995 to 2017.

Darren Lowe was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He played for the University of Toronto's Varsity Blues team. This was from 1979 to 1983 while he was a student.
University and Olympic Hockey
Lowe was a great player in university. He was named to the OUAA Second All-star team in 1981–82. The next year, 1982–83, he made the First All-star team.
He was chosen to play for the Canada national men's ice hockey team in 1983–84. He played 67 games for the team. He scored 18 goals and made 15 assists. Darren Lowe played with this team at the 1984 Winter Olympics. Canada finished in 4th place in the ice hockey tournament.
Professional Hockey and Awards
The Pittsburgh Penguins signed Lowe as a free agent. He played eight games for them in the 1983–84 NHL season. He scored one goal during his time with the Penguins.
After playing for the Penguins, Lowe went back to the Varsity Blues. He played for them from 1984 to 1986. During this time, he earned a teaching degree. In 1986, he received special awards from the university. These included the George M. Biggs Trophy for leadership and sportsmanship. He also got the Harry Jerome Award and the U of T Silver "T" for his excellent sports performance.
Lowe continued his professional career from 1986 to 1991. He played for teams like Jokerit in Helsinki. He also played for the Flint Spirits, Maine Mariners, and San Diego Gulls. His best season was 1987–88 with the Flint Spirits. He scored 53 goals and made 64 assists that year.
Coaching Career
Darren Lowe stopped playing hockey in 1991. He then started coaching right away.
Early Coaching Roles
Lowe joined the Ryerson Rams as an assistant coach. This was for the 1991–92 season. He then returned to the Varsity Blues as an assistant coach. That was for the 1992–93 season. He became the head coach for the Varsity Blues in the 1995–96 season.
Coach of the Year
Lowe was a very successful coach. For the 2002–03 season, he was named the OUA East Division "Coach of the Year". This was his second time winning this award in three years. He had also won it in 2000–01. He led the Blues to finish first in their division four times in a row.
Lowe also had other coaching experiences. He was a guest coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1998. In the summer of 2001, he worked with some of the Leaf's young players. In 1999–2000, Lowe was a guest coach for the Canada national ice hockey team.
