Darryl Terrence Byrd was a professional American football player. He was born on September 3, 1960. Darryl played as a linebacker for the Los Angeles Raiders. He was part of the National Football League (NFL). He played for three seasons with the Raiders. Before turning pro, he played college football at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. A big highlight of his career was winning Super Bowl XVIII with the Raiders.

Early Life and College Years
Darryl Terrence Byrd was born in San Diego, California. This happened on September 3, 1960. He grew up in Union City, California. There, he went to James Logan High School.
After high school, Darryl played college football. He joined the Illinois Fighting Illini football team. He played for them from 1979 to 1982. He was a "letterman" for two years. This means he played well enough to earn a special award. In 1982, he made one interception. An interception is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an offensive player.
Professional Football Career
Joining the Los Angeles Raiders
After college, Darryl Byrd was not chosen in the 1983 NFL draft. This is called going "undrafted." But he still got a chance to play. He signed with the Los Angeles Raiders on April 30, 1983.
He was briefly released from the team. But he quickly re-signed the very next day. In his first year, 1983, he played in all 16 games. This is the full regular season.
Super Bowl Champion
Darryl also played in three playoff games that year. The Raiders made it all the way to the Super Bowl. They won Super Bowl XVIII! They beat the Washington Redskins. This was a huge win for Darryl and his team.
In 1984, Darryl played in all 16 games again. He started one of those games. He was released by the Raiders in August 1985. He re-signed a few days later, but then was released again.
Other Teams and Return to Raiders
Darryl Byrd then signed with the San Francisco 49ers. This was on May 14, 1986. However, he was released by them in August of that year.
In 1987, Darryl signed with the Raiders again. He was released in September. But he re-signed later that month. This happened during the 1987 NFL players strike. He played in three games during this time. He started two of them. After the strike ended, he was released by the Raiders on October 19, 1987.
