Darryl Terrence Byrd, born on September 3, 1960, is a former American football player. He was a talented linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). Byrd played for the Los Angeles Raiders for three seasons. He also played college football at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. A big highlight of his career was winning Super Bowl XVIII with the Raiders.

Darryl Byrd's Early Life and College Football

Darryl Terrence Byrd was born in San Diego, California, on September 3, 1960. He grew up and went to James Logan High School in Union City, California.

After high school, Darryl played college football for the Illinois Fighting Illini football team. He was part of the team from 1979 to 1982. He earned a "letterman" title in 1981 and 1982. This means he played well enough to earn a special award from his college. In 1982, he even made one interception, which is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an offensive player.

Darryl Byrd's NFL Career

Darryl Byrd was not chosen in the 1983 NFL draft. However, he still got a chance to play professional football. He signed with the Los Angeles Raiders on April 30, 1983.

Even though he was briefly released and then re-signed, Darryl played in all 16 games during his first season in 1983. That year was very exciting for him. He also played in three important playoff games. The Raiders went all the way to win Super Bowl XVIII, beating the Washington Redskins. This was a huge achievement for Darryl and his team!

In 1984, Darryl continued to play in all 16 games for the Raiders. He even started one game that season. He was released by the Raiders in August 1985.

Later, Darryl signed with the San Francisco 49ers on May 14, 1986. However, he was released by them in August of the same year.

Darryl returned to the Raiders in 1987. During the 1987 NFL players strike, he was re-signed and played in three games, starting two. After the strike ended, he was released again in October 1987.
