Darryl Jones's Musical Journey
How Darryl Jones Started Playing Music
Darryl Jones was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 11, 1961. His dad was a drummer. His mom often listened to soul music on the radio.
When Darryl was seven, his father taught him to play drums and xylophone. At age nine, he saw his neighbor, Angus Thomas, play bass in a school talent show. This inspired Darryl to switch to the bass guitar.
He started learning from Angus Thomas. Within a year, Darryl performed with his brother at the next school talent show. His mother would often drive him to his music gigs. After finishing high school at 17, Darryl began playing music in Chicago. He played with other musicians like Vincent Wilburn Jr..
Playing with Famous Musicians
In 1985, Darryl joined Sting's first solo band. He played alongside musicians like Branford Marsalis and Omar Hakim. With Sting, he recorded two albums: Dream of the Blue Turtles and Bring On the Night. He also appeared in a documentary about the band.
In 1993, Darryl tried out to join the Rolling Stones. Their longtime bassist, Bill Wyman, had retired. Darryl got the spot and started touring with them in 1994. He has been touring and recording with the band ever since.
