Omar Hakim (born February 12, 1959) is an amazing American drummer. He is also a talented music producer, arranger, and composer. Omar Hakim is famous for playing drums on many different types of music. These include jazz, jazz fusion, and pop music. He has worked with many famous artists. Some of them are David Bowie, Sting, Madonna, and Daft Punk.

Early Life and First Steps in Music
Omar Hakim was born in New York City on February 12, 1959. His father, Hasaan Hakim, was a trombonist. A trombonist is someone who plays the trombone. Omar started playing the drums when he was only five years old. He first performed with his father's band when he was about nine or ten.
Omar Hakim's Music Career
Omar Hakim first became widely known in 1980. He was playing drums for singer Carly Simon. In 1982, he joined the famous band Weather Report.
Working with David Bowie
Omar Hakim played drums on David Bowie's very successful album, Let's Dance. This album came out in 1983. He also played on Bowie's next album, Tonight, in 1984. David Bowie said that Hakim was "a fascinating drummer." He also said Omar had "impeccable timing" and was "always fresh in his approach."
Playing with Dire Straits
In late 1984, Omar Hakim joined the band Dire Straits. He helped record their fifth album, Brothers in Arms. Omar re-recorded almost all the drum parts on the album in just three days. This album became very popular.
Other Big Projects
Omar Hakim was also part of the band for Sting's album, The Dream of the Blue Turtles. This album was released in June 1985. Around this time, Omar started teaching himself how to program drum machines. This made him even more popular for pop, rock, and R&B music. He worked with stars like Madonna.
He continued to play jazz fusion music. He worked with artists like Miles Davis and John Scofield. In 1989, he released his first album as a band leader, called Rhythm Deep. This album even featured his singing. It was nominated for a Grammy Award.
In the 1990s, Omar Hakim learned more about electronic drums. This opened up even more opportunities for him. He recorded with pop stars like Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. His second album as a leader, The Groovesmith, came out in 2000.
In 2015, Omar Hakim joined the band Journey for their North American tour. He filled in for their regular drummer due to personal reasons.
Omar Hakim has been featured on the covers of important drumming magazines. He was on Modern Drummer in 2014 and DrumHead in 2017. In 2017, he became the Chairman of the Percussion Department at Berklee College of Music. This is a very respected music school.
In September 2022, Omar Hakim performed at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert. This was a special event at Wembley Stadium. He played with many famous musicians, including Nile Rodgers and members of Foo Fighters.
